First place – Special Section (Senior PGA Championship) – Staff  (I contributed design)

Judge’s comments

“Nice work on an event section. This entry covered all aspects of a Senior PGA event that the community has obviously turned into a big event. Great graphics on the golf course and golfers and sharp photography. Who would have known food celebrities would be part of a PGA event?”

2014 Hoosier State Press Association Foundation Better Newspaper Contest

Award

Third place – Best Ongoing News Coverage (“Miracle on Mt. Baldy”) – Staff

Judge’s comments

“This was my favorite among the entries in which a news story falls into your lap. In this case, a small staff was able to do an admirable job covering a very big story.”

Award

Third place – Best News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure (“Miracle on Mt. Baldy”) – Staff

Judge’s comments

“An unusual incident – a boy buried under 11 feet of sand – gets comprehensive treatment under deadline pressure. Good photos as well, and I thought the timestamps on them were a good touch.”

2010 Wisconsin Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest

Second Place – General Excellence (Group E) — Wisconsin Dells Events

Judge’s comments

“Attractive flags. Clean layout for calendars, reports, brief items. Pages could use large, dominant photos, especially front page.”

2009 Wisconsin Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest

The stories that made it possible:

Welcome back, Lake Delton
Tourism spending goes up
How Lake Delton got its water backLake Delton timeline
